When You're Trying To Make A Dollar Out Of Fifteen Cents

You would be astonished what amazing items you can find and thrift stores and yard sales. As the old cliche states, one persons trash is another ones treasure. L.A. is the mecca of weekend yard sales and if you are patient and have no problems throwing a few elbows you may find that perfect lamp or jewelry box. If your looking to truly design on a dime don't be afraid to check out places like the Goodwill Store and Out of The Closet. In addition to rummaging through someones hand-me-downs you may also grab a great t-shirt or pair of jeans.
Using these resources is also a good way for you to purge your old stuff. By donating furniture and accessories to these non-profit centers you can receive a tax write-off, you make room for something new in your place, and perhaps your hand me downs may be someone else's killer find. One of my all time favorite items that I found by just stopping on a whim at a yard sale on my corner was an original "Lite-Brite" for just $1.00. I bust it out for birthdays and such and it always brings a smile to the crowd.

Don't Be Afraid To Haggle When Buying Furniture

Living in this economic downturn does have its advantages. There are some really great values out there now on home furnishings and decor and in addition to the sale price you shouldn't be embarrassed to haggle even more. It's kind of strange that it's acceptable to haggle or bargain when buying a car but not for most other big purchase items. My father always told me, 'if you don't ask you won't get". Well I was shocked once when I got a discount at Pottery Barn of all places. My friend wanted to buy this classic cane rocking chair.
The salesman said it was discontinued and the one on the floor was the last one but he could buy it. I asked him if he can do any better because it was a floor sample and sure enough he asked his manager and she said sure take an additional 10% off! Many stores will also give you a further discount for cash so they don't have to pay the credit card fees. Hey this is a different world we live in now. The money trees in our backyards have all been chopped down so don't be embarrassed to ask if they can do better. The store owners' have to make a living too so they would rather make less then lose the sale all together.

I'm So Lucited!

Acrylic or what most people refer to as Lucite or Plexiglass is becoming very popular in furniture again. The revival could be mostly credited to Philippe Starck's ghost chair a reinvention of the famous Louis XV arm chair. You can find some great knock-offs of this chair at places like IKEA but if you want the real thing click here. Lucite is a fun, fresh, and now affordable way to decorate your house. From dining chairs to coffee tables it creates a lighter and warmer look. You can find these great nesting tables seen above at CB2.
